Your GST/HST return, drafted from your books
Pick the filing period and AviBooks drafts your GST/HST return from the books you already keep: sales, the tax you collected, your input tax credits and the net tax. You check the figures and file them with the CRA, or your accountant does.
- Full product, no feature tiers.
- Every new account is approved personally.
Four lines of the return, filled from your books
Open Sales, then Tax remittance, and pick the dates: a month, a quarter or a year, whatever your filing period is. The draft sits at the top, ready to copy onto the return.
- Line 101, sales and other revenue: every line of the invoices you issued in the period, taxed or not, less customer credit notes
- Line 105, GST/HST collected: the GST and HST on those invoices, less the tax on customer credit notes
- Line 108, input tax credits: the GST and HST on your bills and on your scanned receipts, less supplier credit notes
- Line 109, net tax: line 105 less line 108; a negative amount is a refund due to you
Receipts claimed once, never twice
Most small businesses never type in a bill: their purchases live as paper. AviBooks reads the GST/HST printed on each receipt you scan, photograph or email in, and claims it on line 108. When a receipt is the paper behind a bill you entered, its tax already comes from the bill, so the receipt is skipped. A receipt in US dollars is left out too: the tax on it is US sales tax, not GST/HST.
Each document in its own period
An invoice counts in the period of its issue date, a bill in the period of its bill date and a credit note in the period of its own date. Void documents and invoices still in draft are left out: no tax is due on an invoice you never sent. Invoices and bills in US dollars convert to CAD at the exchange rate of their own date, the same rate the ledger used.
QST, PST and RST, shown beside it
The same report lists every tax by authority: GST and HST for the Canada Revenue Agency, QST for Revenu Québec, PST and Manitoba RST for the province. The return draft holds the GST/HST part only and says what you file elsewhere. The QST return itself is not drafted. PST and RST paid on purchases are a cost, not a credit, so they never lower line 108.
What stays with you
The draft uses the regular method: tax collected less input tax credits. It does not fill the lines that need figures only you have, such as adjustments (lines 104 and 107), instalments already paid (line 110) and rebates (line 111), and it does not work out a Quick Method remittance. It files nothing: you enter the figures in the CRA's online service or on the paper return, or your accountant does.
Lock the period once it is filed
After filing, lock the books through the last day of the period (Ledger, then Lock date). Invoices, bills, payments, credit notes and bank lines dated in it can no longer be added, changed or deleted, and reopening the period takes an admin and a reason.
Questions about the GST/HST return
Does AviBooks file my GST/HST return?
No. It drafts the figures from your books. You review them and file with the CRA yourself, online or on paper, or your accountant files them.
Which filing periods does it handle?
Any dates you pick, so monthly, quarterly and annual filers all work. The draft counts the invoices, bills, credit notes and receipts dated in the period.
Does it handle the Quick Method?
No. The draft follows the regular method: GST/HST collected less input tax credits. A Quick Method filer works out the remittance with the CRA's rates.
Does it draft the QST return?
No. The QST collected and paid shows in the same report, under Revenu Québec, but the QST return is not drafted.
Can I see where line 108 comes from?
Yes. The report shows how much of it comes from scanned receipts and how many receipts were counted; the rest comes from your bills.
